Travis Wright from MarketingLand writes ‘Google+ is unofficially officially dead.’

(https://marketingland.com/unofficial-death-google-means-marketing-122696). RIP Google+, can I get an F in the chat to pay respects to the social media platform that has finally come to an end? Google+ did not have that much traction, to begin with when it started; however, this still shows that social media is continuously evolving and some platforms will rise while others fall. This event shows that marketers should diversify and be able to adapt to various different platforms in order to stay ‘trendy’ and follow their target audience. This may be done through research in order to find out where and how digital marketers should interact with their target audience. Mr. Wright’s takeaway from this event is “Don’t put all your digital marketing eggs in one basket”.

There is also a shift away from platforms such as Facebook and Twitter to other social media platforms such as Instagram, Snapchat, and WhatsApp. Facebook is still number one; however, this could easily shift in the next few years and could enter the same realm as Myspace. One of the reasons for the downfall of Google+ listed by Sean on Seo-Hacker is their data breach that happened in 2018. He relates this to the Facebook scandal of Cambridge Analytica. This is a big contributing factor that has led to individuals leaving Facebook for other sites and the author is drawing parallels between the two companies. Social media users are looking for safer options, such as Snapchat or WhatsApp where they know their data is safe and is not permanently uploaded to the web (https://seo-hacker.com/google-plus-shutting-down/).

Digital marketers are now following the customers, and digital marketers need to continually be familiar with the various channels in order to best reach their target audiences and be able to recognize the shifts in media when they happen.
