Social media marketing is an ever-changing landscape that businesses need to adapt with in order to stay relevant and in the minds of their consumers. There are various platforms that have come and gone in the short few decades that social media has existed, each with their own specific way of sharing information. The first platforms for social media that were used were Friendster and Six Degrees, which then evolved into Myspace and LinkedIn. Finally, we now have Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. The next step will be decentralized, block chain, and open source technology that will be evolving the industry even further and address some major issues within the industry. Companies will have to constantly adapt and reassess the most important platforms to be present on since presence and activity are contributing factors to businesses succeeding with social media. The ways of posting and sharing information on these platforms are also evolving. How a company utilizes Facebook will be more long-form as opposed to posting short paragraphs or links on Twitter or even pictures/ memes on Instagram. This leads digital marketers to keep up with the latest certificates from social media companies and third-party sources in order to stay competitive in a quickly evolving field. These communication skills must be honed, and the platform well understood to avoid incidents such as the Woolworth’s ‘Fresh in Our Memories’ Anzac meme ad failure, which ended up getting out of control and had to be ended by the company.
